Biography:
Originally from the rural logging town of Darrington, WA, Dr. Schillhammer has crisscrossed the country prior to settling in Southwest Montana. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he attended the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle before heading back east to complete his general orthopedics training at the State University of New York in Syracuse.
Rather than beginning general practice right away, Dr. Schillhammer spent a year as a sports medicine fellow in Northern New Mexico at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute. The fellowship was an opportunity to advance his expertise in shoulder and knee procedures from minimally invasive arthroscopic cases (such as rotator cuff repair, labrum repair, meniscus repair, cartilage restoration and ACL reconstruction) to open joint restoration procedures (knee replacement, severe shoulder instability, and shoulder replacement).
In addition to the operative experience, the sports medicine fellowship provided numerous experiences taking care of athletes with unique challenges in several sports from football and basketball to skiing and snowboarding. After being in a destination outdoors community, Dr. Schillhammer is adept in treating trauma related to recreational sports such as skiing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, ect.
The Schillhammer family was drawn to the region both by its natural beauty and small town charm and values. You will likely find them taking advantage of the area's trails, ski slopes, rivers, and lakes.
